Geo436.com blog: Flooding forces over 40,000 to be evacuated in China

Geo436 BEIJING: Floods triggered by heavy rains drove more than 400-thousand people from their homes in Southern China.

Residents in China’s southern island province of Hainan fled to government buildings and schools for shelter as heavy rains left thousands homeless over the weekend, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Official sources say 2.7 million people have been affected by the floods. In some places, some 90 percent of farmland has been affected

Several people are missing and there’s concern that overseas tourists may also be caught up in the emergency.

More heavy rains are expected throughout the week.

Record-level flooding in Hainan over the past month has damaged roads, overflowed reservoirs and cut off telecommunication networks across the region. AGENCIES
