COD Black Ops: Dead Ops is Zombie Missions, Reasons Why

We have yet more news coming in from Call of Duty: Black ops now. An official list of achievements and trophies which was leaked and confirmed to be real has revealed a brand new mode called Dead Ops.

The entire list of achievements was revealed by WeTheGamerz, and was seemingly made official by this tweet from Treyarch’s Josh Ollin.

‘The #CODBlackOps Achievements list is out there… Some minor spoilers contained within, so you may want to avoid said list!’

With that aside, a scroll down the list will reveal a few achievements which are related to the unannounced ‘Dead Ops’. It hasn’t been confirmed to be zombie missions, but we’ll give you reasons why it definitely will be.

The first Dead Ops trophy reads as follows: ‘I hate Monkeys’ – Kill 7 monkeys in under 10 seconds in the Rebirth labs’. Players of World at War will remember the monkey bombs from Der Riese, and it looks like they have some connection to Black Ops as well.

As for the ‘Rebirth Labs’, well that is explained in the next Dead Ops Achievement: ‘No Leaks’ – Make it through the NOVA 6 gas without dying on Rebirth Island’. This Rebirth Labs is obviously located on Rebirth Island, and if you have to make it through the ‘NOVA 6′ gas, then it is definitely to do with zombies, since GKNOVA6.com is Treyarch’s viral marketing website for the spin-off mode.

The next two achievement unlocks give away the biggest hint that ‘Dead Ops’ will be standalone Zombie Missions in the game. ‘Insert Coin’ -’Access the terminal and battle the forces of the Cosmic Silverback in Dead Ops Arcade’. That doesn’t look like a standard Zombie survival game to me, and Cosmic Silverback suggests that there even might be a ‘boss’ in the Dead Ops missions – do you have any ideas on this?

In a way, it is a shame that the full list has been leaked already, but it is very exciting to hear about this new Dead Ops mode. Let us know your thoughts and ideas on it. Looks like gamers will be getting extreme value for money if this mode is confirmed by Treyarch.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News Ayodhya land to be divided into three parts: HC

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has ordered that the disputed holy site in Ayodhya be divided into three parts: one-third for Hindu Mahasabha, one-third for Sunni Waqf Board and one-third for the Nirmohi Akhara.
The three-member bench of the Allahabad High Court, comprising justices SU Khan, Sudhir Agarwal and DV Sharma today delivered a split verdict in 60-year old Ayodhya title suit.
The majority ruled that the disputed land in Ayodhya was a joint property, held by all the three claimants namely Hindu Mahasabha , Nirmohi Akhara and Sunni Central Waqf Board. Justice SU Khan said that the mosque was built by Babar, not by demolishing a temple , but on the ruins of a temple.
According to Chief Standing Counsel of the UP Government, Devendra Upadhaya, the two judges namely Justices Khan and Agarwal ruled that the disputed property should be equally divided ( One third each) among the three parties. Justice DV Sharma has been categorical that the land belongs to Hindus and has rejected the claim of the Sunni Waqf Board.
However, the entire bench is of the view that the central dome of the disputed structure goes to Hindu Mahasabha, where the idols were installed in 1949 and again in 1992 after the demolition of the Babri Mosque. The sita rasoi and ram chabootara have been given to Nirmohi Akhara.
The bench has also directed maintenance of status quo for three months and invited suggestions from all the parties for demarcation of the land.
In view of the verdict, the nation has been put on high alert. Uttar Pradesh has turned into a fortress with thousands of paramilitary personnel patrolling the streets.
The intelligence network is on high alert throughout the state to monitor movement and activities of anti-social elements.
Aerial surveys of “sensitive places”, including the Ram Janmbhoomi complex in Ayodhya has been done, police sources said.
All the security personnel deployed in Ayodhya and Faizabad have been equipped with tear gas shells and rubber bullets and the gazetted officers of various government departments have been asked to assist in policing. They have also been provided with rubber bullets and tear gas shells.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court paved the way for the Ayodhya verdict to be delivered by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.

Geo436.com blog: Ayodhya verdict: Allahabad High Court says divide land in 3 ways

Breaking News Lucknow:  Sixty years after it first went to court, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has pronounced its judgement in the Ayodhya title suit.
Senior advocate and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad emerged from court today to say that the three-judge bench had ruled in a majority judgement 2:1, that one-third part of the disputed land should be given to the Sunni Waqf Board, one-third to the Nirmohi Akhara and one-third to the party for ‘Ram Lalla’. Prasad represents one of the litigants.
Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed the court had ruled that the place where the idol of Ram was kept was the birthplace of the deity and the idols should not removed.
Prasad claimed that the court had asked for a status quo for three months and in that time the litigants had to decide how to split the party.
Litigants emerged from the courtroom with copies of the judgment and there has been chaos outside the Lucknow court ever since.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court comprising Justice S U Khan, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice D V Sharma, delivered the judgement today. (Watch: The background to the Ayodhya dispute)
The dispute at hand is about whether the 2.7 acres of disputed land on which the Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished on December 6, 1992, belongs to the Sunni Central Waqf Board or to the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha.
It has been a protracted legal battle, and people across the country have spoken in one voice on the need to maintain peace and harmony irrespective of the verdict.

Geo436.com blog: India ups security ahead of Ayodhya verdict

Geo436 NEW DELHI: Security was tightened across northern India Thursday as the government braced for possible violence ahead of a court verdict on a long-running dispute over a site claimed by Hindus and Muslims.

A high court bench in Uttar Pradesh state is expected to deliver a ruling on who has the right to the land in Ayodhya town where the 15th Babri mosque stood until Hindu fanatics pulled it down in 1992.

At least 2,000 people were killed in widespread riots that followed the destruction of the mosque.

Hindu organizations claim a temple dedicated to their god Ram predated the mosque. They want to build a temple at the site which they claim marks the spot where Ram was born.

Over 190,000 police and paramilitary troops were deployed across Uttar Pradesh ahead of verdict expected to be announced in state capital Lucknow Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Bulk mobile messaging services have been banned across the country until further notice.

Several states including Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka tightened security, while chief ministers of most others made public appeals for calm.

Allahabad High Court will decide who owns land where Hindu mobs tore down a 16th Century mosque in 1992. Hindus claim the site of the Babri Masjid is the birthplace of their God, Ram, and want to build a temple there.

National capital Delhi was under a tight security blanket for the both the start of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday and the mosque verdict with heavy police presence in public places.

Schools and colleges in Uttar Pradesh were closed and paramilitary forces were carrying out air surveillance over 22 potential trouble spots, a local news agency reported.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, leaders of political parties and religious organizations as well as film stars appealed for calm.

Federal Home Minister P Chidambaram said Wednesday that the government did not expect any violence but had to take precautionary measures. ”I once again appeal to the people to maintain peace,” he said.

Representatives of the main litigants in the case, the Sunni Waqf Board and the All India Hindu Mahasabha, have said they will abide by the verdict, subject to challenging it in the Supreme Court.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News Pakistan halts NATO supply trucks

Pakistani authorities have stopped NATO supply trucks in northwest Pakistan following a helicopter attack by US-led troops in the tribal region, officials say.

The government officials said on Thursday the order came to stop oil tankers and trucks carrying NATO supplies at the Torkham border post bordering Afghanistan.
The block of NATO trucks came after US-led helicopters targeted tribal regions in Pakistan, killing at least three Pakistani soldiers and injuring five others.
The choppers attacked a military checkpoint in Pakistan’s Kurram tribal region near Afghanistan’s border on Thursday.
Pakistani airspace was violated by two gunship helicopters in a Thursday pre-dawn assault.
The violation is the third attack by foreign troops in Pakistani territories within a week.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News Officials: Pakistan blocks NATO supply trucks

Breaking News PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Pakistani government officials say senior authorities have ordered them to block oil tankers and trucks carrying NATO supplies at a checkpoint bordering Afghanistan.
The two officials say they were not told the reason for the order at the Torkham border post. However, it comes after threats by Pakistani officials to stop providing protection to NATO convoys if the military alliance’s choppers hit Pakistani targets again.
Earlier Thursday, Pakistani officials alleged a NATO airstrike hit a border post, killing three Pakistani troops.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to the media.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — A NATO helicopter attack Thursday killed three Pakistani security officers close to the Afghan border, Pakistani officials alleged.
A NATO official in Afghanistan confirmed there was an attack in the border area close to the Upper Orakzai region, but gave no further details saying the incident was being investigated. He and the Pakistani security officers declined to give their names, citing the sensitivity of the incident.
The attack was likely to worsen ties between Pakistan and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan at a crucial time in the 9-year war.
Relations have been tense since NATO helicopters last weekend opened fire on targets across the border, killing several alleged insurgents. Those incidents were protested by the Pakistan government.
Pakistani officials differed on the exact location of the incident, saying it either took place in Upper Kurram or Upper Orakzai. The remote districts neighbor each other and there is no marked border between the two.
The dead men were from a paramilitary force tasked with safeguarding the border, they said. Their bodies had been taken to the region’s largest town of Parachinar, said one of them.
Pakistan has a complicated alliance with the United States and NATO that is often subject to tensions.
Pakistan has to balance its support for Western forces in Afghanistan with the intense anti-U.S. feelings of much of its population. Opinion polls show many people regard the United States as an enemy, and conspiracy theories stating U.S. troops are poised to attack Pakistan and take over its nuclear weapons are common.

Breaking News Pakistan Discontinue NATO Supply after the attack of NATO mission in Pakistan

Geo436.com blog: NATO border strike in Kurram, 3 Pak soldiers killed

Breaking News PARACHINAR: Three Pakistani soldiers were killed in a NATO helicopter attack in a border region with Afghanistan, security and military officials said, apparently the fourth such strike in recent days.

The attack by two NATO helicopters took place early in the morning in Teri Mangal village in Kurram, an ethnic Pashtun tribal region on the Afghan border.

“The helicopters shelled the area for about 25 minutes. Three of our soldiers manning a border post were killed and three wounded,” a senior security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

He did not say whether Pakistan responded to the strike. Pakistan on Monday expressed outrage at violation of its airspace by NATO helicopters in Afghanistan over the weekend, saying it would consider “response options” to any future incursions.

Two NATO Apache helicopters killed 30 insurgents on Pakistani soil after a rare manned pursuit across the border from eastern Afghanistan late on Friday, after militants attacked a remote Afghan security outpost in Khost province, NATO forces said.

On Saturday, two Kiowa helicopters returned to the area and killed another four, NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) said in a statement in Kabul on Sunday.

Monday saw another possible border violation, with six militants killed in Kurram, a Reuters reporter in the area said. But an ISAF spokesman said it was “near the border,” rather than in Pakistan.

ISAF said in a statement issued late on Sunday that helicopters crossing into Pakistan were following its rules of engagement.

The rugged border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan is seen by Washington as a critical battleground in its fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Incursions into Pakistan are extremely rare and the United States prefers to use unmanned aerial drones for its attacks on militant positions in Pakistan’s borderlands, known to be a haven for militant groups.

The United States has stepped up missile strikes by pilotless drone aircraft in the border areas in recent weeks. So far 21 strikes have been carried out by the U.S. drones in September, the record number in a month.

Western security sources said on Wednesday a militant plot to stage coordinated attacks in Europe has been disrupted in its early stages by drone strikes in Pakistan.

Geo436.com blog: Heavy security for India Ayodhya mosque ruling

Breaking Story India: Nearly 200,000 security personnel are being deployed in northern India ahead of a court ruling on the long-running Ayodhya religious dispute.

Helicopters are keeping watch overhead and authorities have urged calm amid fears the ruling could spark unrest.
The Allahabad High Court will decide who owns land where Hindu mobs tore down a 16th Century mosque in 1992.

Hindus claim the site of the Babri Masjid is the birthplace of their God, Ram, and want to build a temple there.
The destruction of the mosque led to widespread rioting between Hindus and Muslims in which some 2,000 people died.

It was some of the worst religious violence since the partition of India in 1947.
Peace appeal
The high court ruling in the Ayodhya case is due to be announced in the city of Lucknow, in Uttar Pradesh state, on Thursday at 1550 local time (1000 GMT).
Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said on Wednesday that there would be 190,000 security personnel on duty in the state for the ruling.

Mobile phone text message services have been temporarily banned in an attempt to prevent anyone from inciting violence and a media watchdog has appealed to broadcasters to avoid showing inflammatory images, the BBC’s Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi reports.

“The central government has taken adequate measures and has deployed adequate forces to assist state governments in maintaining peace,” Mr Chidambaram told a press conference in Delhi.

“I once again appeal to the people to maintain peace.”
Mr Chidambaram said all state governments had been “advised to be firm and maintain public peace and order and I’m sure they will do it”.
Correspondents say the authorities are anxious as the legal decision could have potentially explosive consequences.

An appeal for peace, signed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has appeared in several Indian newspapers urging people to respect the rule of law and abide by the court order.
Correspondents say the Ayodhya ruling could not have come at a worse time for the authorities – they already have their hands full dealing with security preparations for the Delhi Commonwealth Games which begin on Sunday.
Moreover, many troops are engaged in fighting Maoist rebels across vast tracts of India and the worsening situation in Indian-administered Kashmir has added to security problems.

The court ruling was due last Friday but the Supreme Court deferred the decision, saying it wanted to give Hindus and Muslims more time to resolve the dispute amicably. On Tuesday it said the high court could proceed.
Correspondents say Thursday’s ruling is unlikely to be final and expect the judgement to be appealed.

Geo436.com blog: US imposes sanctions on Iranian officials over abuses

US President Barack Obama has ordered unprecedented sanctions against senior Iranian officials for “sustained and severe violations of human rights”.

The eight men include the head of the Revolutionary Guards, a former interior minister and the prosecutor general.

The treasury department said they would face a travel ban and asset freeze.

The alleged abuses include the killings and beatings of anti-government protesters after the disputed presidential election in June 2009.

Following the poll, millions of Iranians defied official warnings and participated in mass rallies that drew the largest crowds since 1979′s Islamic Revolution.
The authorities launched a brutal crackdown, during which opposition and human rights groups accused the security forces of extra-judicial killings, rapes and torture. Thousands were held without charge.

Over the subsequent six months, at least 40 protesters were killed; the opposition says more than 70 died. At least two people have been executed for related offences, and dozens imprisoned.

‘New tool’
In a statement, the White House said: “As the president noted in his recent address to the United Nations General Assembly, human rights are a matter of moral and pragmatic necessity for the United States.”

“The United States will always stand with those in Iran who aspire to have their voices heard. We will be a voice for those aspirations that are universal, and we continue to call upon the Iranian government to respect the rights of its people.”
All of those named in the US sanctions list served in Iran’s military, law enforcement and justice system around the time of the 2009 protests:

Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC)
Sadeq Mahsouli, the current minister of welfare and security, and former minister of the interior
Qolam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, the current prosecutor general of Iran and former intelligence minister
Saeed Mortazavi, the former prosecutor general of Tehran
Heydar Moslehi, the minister of Intelligence
Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, the current interior minister and former deputy commander of the armed forces for law enforcement
Ahmad-Reza Radan, deputy chief of Iran’s National Police
Hossein Taeb, current deputy commander for Intelligence for the IRGC and former commander of the IRGC’s Basij militia
Any assets in the US held by the eight Iranians will be frozen, and US citizens and companies will be prohibited from doing business with them.

“On these officials’ watch, or under their command, Iranian citizens have been arbitrarily arrested, beaten, tortured, raped, blackmailed and killed,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a news conference in Washington.

“Yet the Iranian government has ignored repeated calls from the international community to end these abuses.”

Mrs Clinton said it was the first time the US had imposed sanctions against Iran for human rights abuses.

“We would like to be able to tell you that it might be the last but we fear not,” she said.
“We now have at our disposal a new tool that allows us to designate individual Iranians officials responsible for or complicit in serious human rights violations and do so in a way that does not in any way impact on the well-being of the Iranian people themselves.”

The US has banned most trade with Iran since 1979, when Iranian students stormed its embassy in Tehran and took diplomats hostage.

The Islamic Republic has also been subjected to four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to suspend the enrichment of uranium, as well as unilateral US and EU measures. The US and its allies suspect Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge it denies.

Mr Jafari is already subject to US sanctions over the nuclear programme.

The BBC’s Kim Ghattas in Washington says it is unclear what impact the move will have, as the men are unlikely to have any assets in the US.

But the Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, said that when the US targeted specific individuals or entities, other countries often responded by cutting off their economic and financial dealings with them. European nations are reportedly working on similar sanctions.

US diplomats say they decided to focus more on human rights abuses in Iran because the emphasis on the country’s controversial nuclear programme alone was not enough to isolate its leadership or change its behaviour, our correspondent adds.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News U.S. adds more sanctions against Iran for human rights abuses

Breaking News Washington (CNews) — Citing “mounting evidence” of repression of the Iranian opposition, the Obama administration added more sanctions against Iranian government officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards Corps and others accused by the United States of being responsible for human rights abuses.
The sanctions, announced Wednesday by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, block the assets of, and prohibit U.S. citizens from engaging in any business with, those on the list, which includes the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the country’s prosecutor general, and the ministers of welfare and intelligence.
“On these officials’ watch or under their command Iranian citizens have been arbitrarily, beaten, tortured, raped, blackmailed and killed,” Clinton said. “Yet the Iranian government has ignored repeated calls from the international community to end these abuses, to hold to account those responsible, and respect the rights and fundamental freedoms of its citizens.”
“Today we declare our solidarity with their victims and with all Iranians who wish for a government that respects their human rights and their dignity and their freedom,” she said.
Geithner emphasized the measures would not harm the whole country, rather the sanctions were designed to target those who engage in behavior that harms the Iranian people.
“We have found that when we single out Iran’s bad actors and expose their illicit conduct–banks, businesses, and governments around the world respond by cutting off dealings with these individuals, groups and businesses,” he said, adding the measures would send a message across the world about the risks to continued business with Iran, just as with the recent sanctions against Iran’s nuclear business.
The US has been increasing its criticism of Iran’s goverment’s human rights record since President Mahmoud Amhadinejad’s disputed landslide election victory unleashed massive demonstrations in the country. Iran’s leaders called the uprising a foreign-led plot to overthrow the regime. It cracked down on the protesters, with many killed and even more jailed. Images of the bloody crackdown fueled worldwide outrage.
Clinton said that new legislation passed earlier this year gives the administration tools to impose sanctions against Iranian officials where there are credible evidence against them. But she acknowledged the administration was “also very mindful” since last year’s election about messages from the opposition about keeping a low profile.
“We had to be careful that this indigenous opposition that we certainly had nothing to do with, that was attempting to stand up for the rights of the Iranian people, was not somehow seen as a U.S. enterprise, because it wasn’t,” she said, adding: “And so walking that line in trying to be both encouraging, forthright and strong in our support of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Iranian people, at the same time not giving any reason for the Iranians to claim that this reaction from within was somehow either motivated or directed or connected with us, required a balancing act.
The order targets Mohammad Ali Jafari, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC); Sadeq Mahsouli, current minister of welfare and security and former minister of the Interior; Qolam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, current prosecutor general of Iran and former minister of intelligence; Saeed Mortazavi, former prosecutor-general of Tehran; Heydar Moslehi, minister of Intelligence; Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, current minister of the Interior and former deputy commander of the armed forces for law enforcement; Ahmad-Reza Radan, deputy chief of Iran’s National Police; and Hossein Taeb, current deputy IRGC commander for intelligence and former commander of the IRGC’s Basij Forces.

Geo436.com blog: India says Pak foreign minister welcome at Games

Geo 436 NEW DELHI: India”s foreign minister on Wednesday invited his Pakistani counterpart to attend the Commonwealth Games which open this weekend, saying it would give them a chance to pursue dialogue. “Mr (Shah Mehmood) Qureshi is most welcome to come and witness some of the Games and there again give us a chance to continue the dialogue,” Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna told NDTV news channel. He issued the invitation in New York where he was attending a meeting of the UN General Assembly along with Qureshi. The Pakistani foreign minister took aim at India with a speech Tuesday at the UN meeting, insisting his government wanted peace but branding India”s rule of disputed Kashmir as “oppression.” Krishna called Qureshi”s comments “unacceptable.” Kashmir, a Himalayan territory with a Muslim majority but a sizeable Hindu minority, has been the subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since independence and triggered two full-fledged wars. The nuclear-armed neighbours have been seeking to boost relations which soured after the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead and derailed a multi-year peace process. Krishna”s invitation to Qureshi came a day after Pakistan”s athletes rejected accommodation provided for them at the crisis-hit Games village as an unsatisfactory and warned organisers to make improvements or provide alternative accommodation. Games organisers are racing against time to bring facilities up to international standards for the Oct 3-14 multinational sporting event.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News Eiffel Tower, park evacuated over bomb alert

Breaking News PARIS — The Eiffel Tower and the surrounding park were evacuated on Tuesday for the second time in two weeks after a bomb alert.
The city’s police headquarters said an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat Tuesday from a telephone booth near the tower.
Last week, France’s national police chief said the country was facing a “peak” terror threat, and that authorities suspect al-Qaida’s North African affiliate of plotting a conventional bomb attack on a crowded target.
That was preceded a week earlier by a false bomb alert at the Eiffel Tower, and investigators are looking into an anonymous phone call that prompted police to evacuate the most-visited monument in the tourism-oriented country.
The French Senate earlier this month voted to ban burqa-style Islamic veils in France, a subject that has prompted warnings by al-Qaida.
Counterterrorism officials in France say the ban is just one of several factors that have made France a target of the group.
Another was France’s military logistical support for a July raid by Mauritanian forces against the group that left six of its militants dead.

Geo436.com blog: Mayor murdered in Mexico is 11th this year

Geo436 MORELIA: The mayor of the Mexican town of Tancitaro, in southern Michoacan state, has been murdered, making him the 11th municipal leader slain so far this year, the state prosecutor said. Mayor Gustavo Sanchez, 29, and a colleague, Rafael Equihua Cervantes, 36, were found murdered on a rural road early Monday, apparently stoned to death, state prosecutor Jesus Montejano said. “We are quite concerned because this is a situation (the style of the execution) quite unlike what organized drug crime usually does,” he added. Sanchez was not known to have a party affiliation and was a teacher by training before taking the helm of the town of 5,500. His predecessor resigned under pressure from an organized crime group. In January, Sanchez fired 60 local police who were replaced by federal officers. Some 28,000 people have died in a surge of suspected drug violence since the government launched a military crackdown on organized crime in 2006. On Monday, Mexican officials said nine people were killed in two incidents of fighting between troops and gunmen in the city of Reynosa in Tamaulipas state on the border with the United States. Six gunmen were killed during one confrontation, and one soldier and two gunmen were killed in a second, the Mexican navy said. Nine individuals accused of links to organized crime were arrested, the navy said. The two raids also hauled in a large stash of weapons, including a range of guns, a rocket launcher, more than 4,000 bullets and several grenades. Mexican troops also seized 60,000 dollars, 12 vehicles, and various military-style uniforms, the navy said.

Geo436.com blog: Breaking News Imran Farooq Murder Linked to Rows Within MQM Guardian.co.uk

Breaking News News Source Guardian.co.uk The Scotland Yard investigation into the Murder in London of the leading Senior MQM leader Dr. Imran Farooq has been told that rows within his own party may have led to his assassination.

Politician may have been about to endorse or join new party set up by General Pervez Musharraf, source claims

Farooq, 50, was stabbed to death earlier this monthduring an attack in which he was also beaten near his home in Edgware, north London. Farooq was a senior figure in Pakistan's MQM (Muttahida Quami Movement) party, and was in exile in London at the time of his death. The murder is being investigated by Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism branch because of the political dimension to the killing.
Sources say intelligence suggests his death was linked to rows within the MQM.
Farooq, once prominent in MQM, had taken a back seat. A senior Pakistani source said he may have been about to endorse or join a new party set up by Pakistan's former military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf. The source said of the motive: "It lies within the MQM. Dr Farooq was probably going to join Musharraf."He is vowing to leave his own London exile and return home to launch a fresh bid for power. His new party, the All Pakistan Muslim League, will launch its programme in London later this week.
Asked by the Sunday Telegraph about his reaction to Farooq's murder, Musharraf said: "It is terrible that such an assassination could happen in a place like London."
Farooq, who was married with two young sons, claimed UK asylum in 1999 alongside Altaf Hussain, the MQM's leader. Hussain, who also lives in exile in London, has said "enemies of the MQM" killed Farooq and they will try to kill him. Pakistan's media reported him as saying on Friday: "Now the enemies of the movement are after my life, but I want to tell them I am not afraid of anyone, whether it's a superpower like the United States or its Nato allies or their Pakistani agents … I fear the Almighty Allah and will never bow down before the conspirators even if they get my British citizenship rescinded."
Police in London are still hunting an attacker who, one witness said, appeared to be an Asian man. Analysts say the MQM has longstanding rivalries with ethnic Pashtun and Sindhi parties in Karachi. The MQM has also been riven by occasional internecine violence.
Before entering the UK, Farooq spent seven years on the run in Pakistan from criminal charges while the MQM was engaged in a violent battle for control of Karachi. He remained a key party figure. While MQM leader Hussain is protected by private guards and rarely appears in public following death threats, colleagues said Farooq never believed he was at risk and had played a smaller role in the party since the birth of his sons, now aged five and three.
Farooq was attacked on his way home from his job at a chemist's shop. He was found near his home after neighbours witnessed what they believed was a fight. Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
MQM party officials in the party's stronghold of Karachi declared a 10-day period of mourning. Previous political killings have triggered riots and deadly clashes between rival factions. Police are keeping an open mind as to the identity of Farooq's killer and their investigation continues

Geo436.com blog: Spot fixing: Ijaz Butt leaving for London

Geo 436 KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt will arrive in London on Tuesday to consult his legal advisers about replying to English demands that he apologise over allegations about match-fixing. Butt would also meet Scotland Yard officials to discuss the spot-fixing accusations against three Pakistan players which overshadowed the team”s recent tour, official sources in the PCB said on Monday. Butt and PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi would attend meetings in London this week, the sources said. “They will meet with the legal firm they have hired in London to finalise the reply to be sent to the English players and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB),” one source said. England”s players, through the ECB, have demanded an apology from Butt after he told a television station he had heard from bookmakers that English players were involved in fixing matches. The ECB threatened legal action unless Butt apologised. Butt”s comments came after the International Cricket Council (ICC) said it was launching an inquiry into Pakistan”s scoring pattern in the third one-day international against England at the Oval. Pakistan”s test captain Salman Butt and his team mates Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif had already been suspended after an investigation into a newspaper report that they had arranged for no-balls to be deliberately delivered during the fourth test at Lord”s in late August. The PCB source said Butt and Rizvi would meet British police to find out what was happening. “The PCB wants to know the progress Scotland Yard has made in its investigations into the allegations. They want a clear picture of whether the players are going to be charged or not,” the source said. “The PCB wants to know if there is a possibility that the suspension on the trio can be lifted.” Pakistan are due to play South Africa in a full series in the United Arab Emirates starting on October 26.
