Geo436.com blog: Israel renews ban on Palestinians officiating in Jerusalem

Geo436 JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday renewed a ban on Palestinian leaders holding official functions in annexed Arab east Jerusalem in the face of reports of plans by prime minister Salam Fayyad to open two schools.

“Netanyahu has ordered the security services to prevent the Palestinian Authority from organising events or ceremonies within the Jerusalem municipal area,” his office said.

Israel”s newspaper reported that Fayyad had intended to attend a school opening in the Dahayat al-Salam neighbourhood of Jerusalem on Tuesday but that police had sealed the premises.

Israel”s right-leaning government insists that the whole of Jerusalem is the country”s “eternal, indivisible capital.” The Palestinians claim the city”s eastern sector as the capital of their promised state.

The city”s future is one of the most intractable issues of the Middle East conflict.
