Storm Alex to make Mexico landfall soon

GEO 436 CANCUN: Tropical Storm Alex gained speed as it approached Mexico’’s Yucatan Peninsula, where it was expected to make landfall Saturday night before heading into the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Alex was not an imminent threat to oil-siphoning efforts at BP Plc’’s blown-out Macondo well in the Gulf, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Current forecasts project Alex will emerge in the southern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and make landfall again as a minimal hurricane later in the week between Brownsville, Texas, and Tuxpan de Rodriguez Cano, Mexico, sparing BP spill collection efforts. Alex, the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, carried sustained winds of 65 miles per hour (100 km per hour) and was located about 30 miles east-southeast of Belize City, Belize. “Alex will move inland over Belize and the Yucatan peninsula in the next few hours,” the Miami-based center said at 5 p.m. EDT/2100 GMT. Quintana Roo state authorities evacuated 200 people from fishing villages across the Chinchorro reef, near Belize, and Xcalak, famous for its diving spots, where Alex was expected to touch land. Some rain was expected over Cancun, a major draw for U.S. and European visitors, but there was no threat to some 35,000 tourists in the area, civil protection said. At least three cruise ships en route to the island of Cozumel, across from Playa del Carmen, another popular resort south of Cancun, changed course to avoid strong waves in the area. Alex was moving toward the west at 12 mph Saturday afternoon but its speed should decrease while it moves over the peninsula. However, “some strengthening is forecast as Alex moves over the Gulf of Mexico by Monday,” forecasters said. The hurricane center said a tropical storm warning was in effect for the coast of Belize and the east coast of Mexico’’s Yucatan Peninsula from Chetumal to Cancun and the islands of Roatan, Guanaja and Utila in Honduras. Alex was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain through Sunday evening. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and meteorologists predict this year will be a very active one. Hurricanes feed on warm water and the sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are higher than usual this year. In the Pacific, Darby moved farther from Mexican coast and was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, 310 miles south-southwest of the Mexican beach resort of Zihuatanejo. Farther out Category 1 hurricane Celia moved over cooler water and was expected to become a remnant on Monday.

Gilani for cooperative approach to fight terrorism

GEO 436 ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said it was collective responsibility of SAARC countries to make sincere efforts and implement effective strategies to rid the region of terrorism. Speaking at a dinner hosted in honour of SAARC interior and home ministers here at Prime Minister House on Saturday night, he said the SAARC leadership must be mindful of the fact that progress and prosperity of peoples was closely linked to the security environment of the region. He said the phenomenon of terrorism has emerged as a huge challenge to the security and prosperity of South Asia as well as the entire world. "Terrorism is a menace whose effects transgress national boundaries. It can be fought best through cooperative approach." He said Pakistan, being in the front line of war on terror, has suffered more than any other country in the world. "Our leader Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, herself, became a victim of terrorism. Hundreds of our people and security officials have sacrificed their lives," he added. Gilani said terrorism has also severely impacted Pakistan's economy. "It cannot be defeated by one country alone. We have to join hands together and fight it as a united front. I am confident that with sustained efforts, undertaken with mutual trust and sincerity, we will be able to eliminate this threat from our region." He said he was confident that the meeting in Islamabad was fruitful in terms of achieving its objectives. He assured of his government's full support and commitment in implementing the outcome of the discussions. The Prime Minister said it was gratifying to note that despite numerous challenges that the SAARC is faced with, it has made progress in various fields, specially in dealing with complex issues of social advancement, economic integration, climate change, organized crimes, drug trafficking and terrorism. He underlined the need to redouble efforts to put SAARC on ascending trajectory for fostering ever stronger regional cooperation among the member States on every matter and issue of mutual concern and thus enhancing SAARC's global profile to the level it deserves. "In doing so, we must evaluate the results of our joint endeavours in the past and address our shortcomings to make SAARC more visible and relevant, in the future." "Regrettably, the South Asia still lags far behind its larger Asian neighbourhood, in terms of economic and social advancement," he added. Gilani said other Asian countries especially those of ASEAN, have forged closer robust cooperation for development and are in a position to avail the benefits of globalization but SAARC has remained inward-looking and unable to keep pace with the neighbouring regions, in those areas. He said the key impediment to SAARC's success had been the absence of an enabling political environment for promotion of mutually beneficial cooperation. "Our region, unfortunately, has remained mired in disputes and tensions. We have remained far too preoccupied with the management of tensions and differences. This has to change and it is my earnest and sincere hope that the required change would take place sooner rather than later." He assured that Pakistan remains committed to the SAARC Charter in furthering the goals of close regional interaction and is desirous to see it develop as a successful regional organization. "We will continue to attach high priority to contribute towards the strengthening of SAARC. We have and will continue to incorporate various SAARC decisions into our national plans and policies." The Prime Minister said SAARC had been created quarter of a century ago, with a clear aim of jointly seeking the betterment of peoples and the region. "We, however, still have a long way to go to reach that goal. It is, hence, important to accelerate our joint efforts in finding ways and means to augment the capacity of SAARC to enable it to serve as a catalyst for the economic and social development of our region." "We must share best practices under the SAARC umbrella, be it in science, technology, management, agriculture or public service. Due to its limitless potential, great economic promise and rich cultural heritage, there is tremendous global interest in South Asia, which we need to optimize through flows of investment and technology in collaborative arrangements with the international and regional institutions," he mentioned. The Prime Minister said SAARC has to position itself to engage interested states and international organizations to develop the win-win complementarities for socio-economic progress. He said SAARC must be seen as a viable regional organization responsive to the aspirations of the masses. "They deserve better and we must not fail them by failing to overcome the hurdles on the way of our heightened cooperation in every possible field." He hoped that the recent deliberations of ministers would give a new incentive for the multifaceted regional cooperation and assured that Pakistan would always be ready to provide its full support to the endeavours of SAARC member countries.

Current Gaza tensions ‘unsustainable’: G8

GEO 436 KARACHI: Leaders of world’’s 8 top industrial democracies meet in Canada for G8 summit, to be followed by 20-nation meet. The leaders of the world’’s eight top industrial democracies on Saturday called the current tensions in Gaza “unsustainable.” The countries – the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and Russia – drafted the statement at the end of a meeting in Canada of the eight powers, and before a larger group of 20 nations was to convene. “The current arrangements are not sustainable and must be changed,” the statement read. The draft came two days after the Council of Europe parliamentarians called on Israel to completely end its siege of the Gaza Strip. Israel imposed a blockade on the Palestinian territory in 2007, following Hamas” violent takeover of the Strip. Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would ease the restrictions of the land blockade, but that the naval blockade would remain intact. “We welcome the Israeli Cabinet's announcement of a new policy towards Gaza as a positive development. We urge full and effective implementation of this policy in order to address the needs of Gaza's population for humanitarian and commercial goods, civilian reconstruction and infrastructure, and legitimate economic activity as well as the legitimate security concerns of Israel that must continue to be safeguarded,” the statement went on to say. Details of the statement were obtained from officials ahead of its release later Saturday. In the statement, the G8 participants expressed regret over the deaths of 9 Turkish activists aboard an aid ship headed for Gaza, in violation of the naval blockade, when Israeli commandos clashed with passengers on May 31. The countries welcomed, however, Israel’’s decision to independently investigate the event “in the expectation that it will bring to light all the facts surrounding this tragic incident.” On Iran, the G8 repeated calls made at its summit last year for Tehran’’s leaders to respect the rule of law amid a crackdown on opposition supporters that began when government forces crushed 2009 post-election street protests. “We expect the government of Iran to respect the rule of law and freedom of expression as outlined in the international parties to which Iran is a party,” the draft statement said.

Caitlin Colford: The Imperial Bret Easton Ellis

GEO 436 Twenty-five years later people are still disappearing. People are still afraid to merge. Imperial Bedrooms — Bret Easton Ellis’s follow up to the book defining (dare I say) our generation, Less Than Zero — was released last week. Ellis was in town to promote the sequel, appearing Wednesday night at Book Court in Brooklyn in front of a jam-packed, sweaty crowd full of novelists, hipsters, and adult children of the MTV Generation. Ellis hasn’t lost his wit, answering questions from stuttering fans with swiftness and sarcasm. He stuck around for two hours after the event making sure to sign everyone’s book, in most cases books, even penning the phrase “Disappear Here” for a tattoo idea that one lucky fan had. Ok, ok, that was me. Imperial Bedrooms is an extreme portrayal of modern humanism. It is a follow up to Less Than Zero , sure, but not many sequels come twenty-five years later. We meet Clay, Blair and Julianne when they have one thing in common, self-destruction. The shocking scenes that play out in the novel are raw, raunchy and pivotal. Ellis remains a twisted soul, unafraid to state the worst in human behavior. In attendance last night was fellow writer Tao Lin, making sure to be third in line to hand off an early print of his upcoming novel, Richard Yates . Not a bad ploy to obtain a quote from one of the best in town. Ellis commented on the possibility to a movie version of Imperial Bedrooms , saying, “Well I know Andrew McCarthy is certainly on board (laughs). If Robert Downey says yes I’ll make the movie Wednesday.” If you have yet to read Less Than Zero , please do before you pick up Imperial Bedrooms . It is a separate story, sure, but reading it prior will make the ride all the more extreme. Grade, you ask? A

Gates: US not bogged down in Afghanistan

GEO 436 WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the war in Afghanistan is “slower and harder than anticipated,” but that he does not believe the U.S. is “bogged down.” Speaking to reporters Thursday, Gates said that progress is being made even if it takes longer than officials thought to help establish the local government and win over the local population. The U.S. is still struggling to gain control of the southern farming town of Marjah as it begins a new offensive in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said the U.S. won”t know if the strategy is working until the end of the year.

Beach revellers train crash kills 13 in Spain

GEO 436 CASTELLDEFELS: An express train slammed into a group of young revellers crossing the tracks to get to a beach party in northeast Spain, killing 13 people and injuring 14, officials said Thursday. “The impact was brutal. The sound was like that of rocks being crushed but it was humans,” one witness to the disaster, named as Andres, told the daily newspaper El Mundo. The accident happened as about 30 people who had got off a local train at the Castelldefels Playa station, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) south of Barcelona, tried to cross the tracks at around 11:30 pm (2130 GMT) Wednesday. They were heading to the nearby beach for the annual San Juan festival that celebrates the start of the summer in parts of Spain and which includes bonfires, fireworks and dancing. A passenger express train travelling to Barcelona from the southeastern city of Alicante then ploughed into the group on the tracks. “It is a day of sadness and mourning on a night that should be of festivity, of a street party,” the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Jose Montilla, said after visiting the scene. Analysis of the remains by forensic experts revealed that 13 people were killed, Catalonia’’s justice minister, Montserrat Tura, said late Thursday. Authorities had earlier put the death toll at 12. One of the 14 injured is in critical condition and two others are in serious condition, the Catalonian health minister, Marina Geli, told a news conference.

India thrash Sri Lanka to win Asia Cup title

GEO 436 DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka, June 24, 2010 (AFP) – India’’s pace battery led by Ashish Nehra demolished Sri Lanka to help their team win the Asia Cup with a comfortable 81-run win on Thursday. Dinesh Karthik top-scored with 66 as India made 268-6 after electing to bat in the day-night final, before the defending champions and hosts were shot out for 187. India, who last won the region’’s premier one-day prize in 1994, denied Sri Lanka a hat-trick of titles following their victories in 2004 and 2008. Nehra claimed four wickets, including two in one over, as Sri Lanka were reduced to 51-5 by the 16th over before being bundled out in the 45th over. India never looked back after hard-hitting opener Tillakaratne Dilshan was dismissed off the fifth delivery, holing out to mid-on off seamer Praveen Kumar. Kumar, who made use of windy conditions to swing the ball, bowled an unchanged opening spell of nine overs in which he conceded just 29 runs. Fellow seamer Zaheer Khan bowled Upul Tharanga, before Nehra wrecked havoc by having Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews caught behind in the 14th over. Nehra also removed Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara for 17, but Thilina Kandamby (31) and Chamara Kapugedara (55 not out) delayed the end. Nehra’’s 4-40 was supported by Zaheer’’s 2-36 and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’’s 2-29. Karthik, who replaced the injured Virender Sehwag, hit nine boundaries to lead India’’s batting at the Rangiri stadium in Dambulla. Karthik put on 62 for the second wicket with Virat Kohli (28) and 46 for the third with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (38). Rohit Sharma propped up with the middle-order with a fluent 41, before Jadeja boosted the score with an unbeaten 25. Kandamby, who had failed to take a wicket with his leg-spin in 32 previous one-dayers, stunned India’’s top order with the dismissals of Karthik and Dhoni. Sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga finished with 2-57, while Nuwan Kulasekara claimed 1-44.
