BA/BSc results: 7,244 declared successful
Peshawar, April 01: The University of Peshawar (UoP) here Wednesday declared results for BA/BSc supplementary examination 2009-10.
A total of 24,058 candidates appeared in the examination in which 7,244 were declared successful with a pass percentage of 30, the UoP Controller of Examinations Iftikhar Hussain Khan told a news conference. He said 10,216 students took part in BA/BSc Part-I examinations. Of them, 27,740 candidates were declared successful with 26.82 pass percentage. Iftikhar said 4,004 out of 13,840 candidates were declared successful in the examination.
The controller said the university had taken a number of steps for improvement in the examination system. The university worked out a distant learning programme and sent it to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for approval, he said, adding that the HEC not only approved the project for the UoP but also for three other universities.
The HEC also agreed to issue a grant of Rs7 million each for the four universities for establishment of coaching centres for guidance of students in different areas of the province, he added.
The controller exams informed that the UoP conducted 137 examinations annually, in which 150,000 students appeared. “Thousands of officials are needed to conduct the examinations,” he said, adding that they had doubled the remunerations for invigilators.
He said the university also tried to conduct the graduation examinations from July to May and the next examination would probably be held in May. Iftikhar Hussain said the present results were prepared in one month, as the examinations were held in February and the results were declared in March. “The university will also hold a workshop at Bara Gali on how to improve the examination system,” he said, adding that representatives from other universities from across the country would be invited to the workshop. He added that a proposal would be floated during the workshop, urging all the universities to conduct examinations and announce the results simultaneously to facilitate the students in their admissions.

Geo436.com blog: Pakistan face calls for life bans on spot-fixing claims
Former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan says swift action must be taken against anyone found to have been part of the alleged no-ball conspiracy at Lord’s.
“If these allegations are true then there should be exemplary punishment,” he told Geo436.
Former International Cricket Council chief Malcolm Speed believes the ICC may ban Pakistan from cricket.
Past captains from both England and Pakistan have called for life bans if the allegations are proved.
Bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, captain Salman Butt and wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal have been questioned by police over claims Amir and Asif bowled no-balls against England in the final Test at pre-determined times as part of a betting conspiracy.
Meanwhile, investigators from Pakistan are flying to London to examine the allegations for themselves.
Pakistan are due to play Somerset on Thursday, but the two Twenty20 matches against England which follow and a five-match one-day series that is scheduled to begin on 10 September have been thrown into doubt.
Imran believes the tour must continue even if some of the Pakistan team are guilty.
“Why should the fans suffer? If the players are found guilty they should be shunted out of the team [and] replaced by others,” he said.
But Speed, who served as ICC chief between 2001 and 2008, disagrees.
“I think that suspension is an option. It is serious,” said Speed.
“It looks as though it is endemic that several of the team members are involved and have been for some time. So perhaps they need a rest,” he said.
The ICC’s anti-corruption unit is already investigating Pakistan’s tour to Australia in December and January, which included a suspicious result in the final Test in Sydney when Pakistan contrived to lose in a dominant position amid a flurry of dropped catches.
The tourists were whitewashed in both Test and one-day series down under and several players were banned for misconduct following an investigation by the PCB.
England’s victory at Lord’s on Sunday wrapped up a 3-1 series victory, but skipper Andrew Strauss believes a considered decision must be made before the two sides meet again.
“I honestly think the best thing is to let the dust settle. It is easy to get emotional about these things at the moment,” stated Strauss.
“There will be some very strong reasons for the series to go ahead. But they are also going to have to think about what the right thing to do is going forward.”
Several of Strauss’s predecessors have called for life bans for any player found guilty.
“The game has to be cleaned up. This is the chance to change the game forever and stamp this kind of thing out,” said former England captain Michael Vaughan.
“The only way the game will move forward is by hitting those involved with life bans if they are found guilty.”
Nasser Hussain, who led the side between 1999 and 2003, doubts that any corruption would have been limited to just one aspect of the team’s play.
“I find it hard to believe that we’re just talking about a few no-balls,” he wrote in the Daily Mail.
“I’m furious with Pakistan for going down this road again.
“My hope is that, if the allegations are true, the authorities are strong.”
Former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja alleges that match-fixing was a problem amongst some of his international team-mates in the mid-1990s and has not been fully eradicated since.
Salim Malik, one of Raja’s one-time team-mates, and medium pace bowler Ata-ur Rehman had life bans for match-fixing rescinded in 2008 and 2007.
“Those players must now be dealt with severely. I would suspend those named in the report immediately to tell the world we mean business,” said Raja.

Apnieyesp News Exculsive Pakistani Players Match Fixing Scandal Video in England
Apnieyesp News Report: The Pakistan cricket camp could be heading for yet another controversy after the reports emanated from the touring squad in England that captain Salman Butt was not seeing eye to eye with the coach and a particular group is still calling the shots in the national team.
Details collected by this correspondent have confirmed that there was plenty of resentment in the Pakistan dressing room after the second day of the fourth Test against England.
“The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board Ijaz Butt who is in London was unhappy with the performance of the players and conveyed to them that if they couldn’t perform they could leave the team, he would find replacements for them,” one insider said.
“Butt gave them a piece of his mind and some of the players resented the way he conveyed his feelings to them,” the insider added.
Pakistan allowed England to recover from a precarious 50 for five to 347 for seven at stumps on the second day with clear on-field tactical blunders by the captain and other players being noticed.
Sources said that Salman Butt himself was not very happy that he still didn’t have complete authority to take decisions and that the coaching staff and management were dictating to him.
“Coach Waqar Younus and his assistant coaches and the management are in a strong position and are backing a particular group in the team which is causing issues,” one source said.
The Pakistani media tore into the team management after Waqar and assistant manager Shafqat Rana were shown in dancing and celebrating the fall of the early England wickets on television.
“What happened to the celebrations at the end of the day and that is what Ijaz Butt also asked of the players,” the source said.
Waqar also had differences with the chief selector, Mohsin Khan during the selection of the one-day squad as he wanted some players to be retained but his suggestions were rejected by the chief selector.
Pakistan cricket since last year has been hit by several controversies mainly created due to groupings in the team and because of player power.
“Even now certain players in the team call the shots and dictate terms and the way final playing elevens are finalised,” the source said.
He said that chief selector Mohsin Khan had conveyed to the PCB Chairman that he was not satisfied with the way selection of the playing teams were made during the series.
“It is the prerogative of the tour selection committee to finalise the playing eleven in a series,” the source explained.

"Butt gave them a piece of his mind and some of the players resented the way he conveyed his feelings to them," the insider added.
Pakistan allowed England to recover from a precarious 50 for five to 347 for seven at stumps on the second day with clear on-field tactical blunders by the captain and other players being noticed.
Sources said that Salman Butt himself was not very happy that he still didn't have complete authority to take decisions and that the coaching staff and management were dictating to him.
"Coach Waqar Younus and his assistant coaches and the management are in a strong position and are backing a particular group in the team which is causing issues," one source said.
The Pakistani media tore into the team management after Waqar and assistant manager Shafqat Rana were shown in dancing and celebrating the fall of the early England wickets on television.
"What happened to the celebrations at the end of the day and that is what Ijaz Butt also asked of the players," the source said.
"Even now certain players in the team call the shots and dictate terms and the way final playing elevens are finalised," the source said.
He said that chief selector Mohsin Khan had conveyed to the PCB Chairman that he was not satisfied with the way selection of the playing teams were made during the series.
"It is the prerogative of the tour selection committee to finalise the playing eleven in a series," the source explained.
