Makhdoom Muhammad Javed Hashmi (Urdu: مخدوم محمد جاوید ہاشمی ) (born January 1, 1948 in Makhdoom Rashid, Multan) is a Pakistani political scientist, geostrategist, statesman, and the central public figure of the PML(N). Hashmi is currently serving as Senior Vice-President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz Wing) led by former Prime minister and party's President Nawaz Sharif.

After the Nawaz's government was overthrown in 1999 in a coup d'état staged and led by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army General Pervez Musharraf, Hashmi was thrown in Central Jail Rawalpindi, along with Nawaz Sharif and other members of his party on false accusations made by General Pervez Musharraf. A democracy activist, Hashmi became one of the most vocal and open critic of the General Pervez Musharraf's military regime where he openly criticized General Musharraf's treatment of dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, policy on War on Terror and Musharraf's mishandling of Tribal areas which led to open the unannounced war in West-Pakistan.

In the 2008 general and parliamentary elections, Javed Hashmi won a record three seats out of the four contested; he only lost out to Shah Mehmood Qureshi in his home city of Multan. Hashmi won National Assembly seats from Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi beating PML-Q leader Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad in the latter one. On 20 July 2010 Javed Hashmi suffered from Brain hemorrhage and was admitted to hospital. After recovering, he was shifted to Islamabad and went to Parliament, where he is currently serving as a Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and the member of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis.

Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has announced to joins Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and has left fo Karachi from Multan.The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) failed in its last effort to stop Makhdom Javed Hashmi from joining the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI). PML-N workers tried to stop Hashmi at his residence when he was leaving for Karachi but he said that he has decided to join PTI. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan, along with his party workers, will receive Javed Hashmi in Karachi.

Early career
An agriculturist and intellectual by profession, Hashmi attended Punjab University where he took his B.Sc. in Political Science in 1969, followed by M.Sc. in 1971, and M.Phil. in 1973, in the same academic discipline from the same institution. He turned to politics in 1985 and joined hands with Nawaz Sharif — who later became Prime minister. From 1985 till 1988, he was elected to the National Assembly for the terms of 1985 till 1988. From 1990 till 1993, Hashmi was the Minister of State for Youth Affairs, and elected as Parliamentarian for the terms of 1993-1997. From 1997-1999, he served as Federal Minister for Health in Nawaz Sharif's cabinet during his second term.

Arrest
On 29 October 2003, he was arrested from Parliament Building on charges of inciting mutiny made by General Pervez Musharraf. Earlier, in a press conference on 20 October 2003, he had read a letter that he received in mail, signed anonymously by some active military officers at Pakistan Army's Combatant Headquarter, known as The Generals Headquarter (GHQ), calling for an investigation into the corruption in the armed forces and criticizing the President and Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf, and his relationship with the American President George W. Bush. His trial was held in the central Adiala Jail instead of a district and sessions court at the Lahore High Court, which raised doubts among human rights groups about its fairness. On 12 April 2004, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery, and defamation.

The verdict has widely been considered as a willful miscarriage of justice by the General Pervez Musharraf's Government. All opposition parties in Pakistan, including Pakistan Peoples Party of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and six party-alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), regarded the verdict to be politically motivated by the ruling junta with malicious intent, declaring him to be a political prisoner. In imprisonment he also wrote two books titled as "Haan, Main Baaghi Hoon!" (Yes, I am a 'Rebel!') and "takhta daar ke saaye tale" (Under the shadow of Hanging board). His book, "Yes, I am a 'Rebel'!", Hashmi clearly stated that he was jailed because he demanded a commission to be formed to investigate the Kargil issue, the restoration of democracy and opposed the Army’s role in politics, and Pakistan's geostrategy policy in central Asia and Europe.

On 3 August 2007, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan under Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry granted him bail after serving approximately three and a half years in prison. Javed Hashmi was released from the Central Jail Kotlakhpat in Lahore on 4 August 2007.

He was again placed under arrest at the declaration of a state of emergency on 3 November 2007

2008 Elections
It is believed that Hashmi was personally asked by party chairman Nawaz Sharif to contest from Rawalpindi for the National Assembly seat, where Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed of the PML[Q] was undefeated since 1988. Makhdoom Javed Hashmi as a result won three National Assembly seats, one from Rawalpindi, one from Punjab Capital Lahore and one from his hometown Multan. Hashmi beat PML-Q's political stalwart Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed in Rawalpindi. However, he lost to PPP President Punjab and old rival Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi in NA-148 (Multan). This was the third time he lost to Qureshi, having beaten him once in 1997. Hashmi's group the PML-N dominated the national and provincial assembly in Punjab. They finished second behind the PPPP and made a coalition with its one time fierce rivals.

After 2008 Elections
Despite winning 3 seats, Hashmi refused to take oath from President Musharraf and thus did not get a place in the federal cabinet. Hashmi was one of the few people who decided not to take oath as it was against his principle. Hashmi is the senior vice president of the party and is always seen in important meeting between the PML(N) and PPPP. Hashmi is considered a political heavyweight and is well respected throughout Pakistan. He is seen many times representing the views of his party the PML-N on various talk shows. It was widely reported that in the by-elections, Hashmi supported an independent candidate who was running against Makhdoom Mureed Hussain Qureshi, brother of Hashmi's old rival Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi. After Mureed Qureshi lost, many people including Mureed Hussain widely condemned the behaviour of Hashmi and said that they will report the incident to the chief of the Peoples Party, Asif Zardari. Hashmi is a strong supporter of the judges who have been sacked and it is said that Hashmi is one of the few people in the Pml N who are trying to convince the senior leadership of the PML-N to stop supporting the PPPP as they believe the PPPP is not serious and sincere when they say that they will restore the judges.

Kerry-Lugar Bill
Javed Hashmi released a very strong reaction on Inter Services Public Relations press release on Kerry-Luger bill. He commented in Parliament that Army should remain within its limit and not interfere in government issues. After this reaction, Hashmi proved himself a true brave and democratic personality and PPPP officials appreciate his words. Hashmi is an indisputable and respectable personality in Pakistani politics. He is a symbol of democratic struggle in Pakistan.He is truly regarded as Pakistani Nelsun Mandela.

Resignation from Parliament (2011)
On 7 May 2011 Hashmi submitted his resignation from Parliament, claiming that is a dummy and not passin real legislation, his resignation has yet to be accepted by Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan the leader of Pakistan Parliamentary affairs.

Hospitalization
In July 20, 2010, Hashmi was hospitalized at Nishtar Hospital after he suffered Brain Hemorrhage, and his body also suffered stroke due to internal bleeding. He was later admitted at the Lahore General Hospital Dr. Tariq Salahuddin, principal of the Lahore General Hospital. Dr. Tariq Salahuddin briefed the media and Hashmi’s CT Angiography reports came out normal.

Emotions for Pakistan

Breaking News New Delhi: With a dead end in sight for the Lokpal bill panel, Anna Hazare on Thursday threatened to go on a hunger strike again saying that the government is not interested in a strong bill.
Upset with the government, Anna Hazare said that he will go on a fast again from August 15.
"It looks like the Centre doesn't want to bring a strong Lokpal bill. It seems will have to go for a hunger strike again," said Hazare.
Is the Lokpal dream over?
Meanwhile, it could be the end of the road for the Lokpal Bill as the government and Team Anna have been unable to reach a consensus after seven meetings.
The two sides are not seeing eye to eye on core issues like the inclusion of the prime minister within the ambit of the Lokpal bill. They will meet again on June 20. If a consensus is not reached, two versions of the bill may be sent to the Cabinet for approval.
The government meanwhile has said that its draft will be ready by June 30 and bill will be tabled in Parliament in the monsoon session.
The government hopes to now rope in the Opposition as well so that it doesn't alone shoulder blame for the breakdown of talks. The Opposition has sought a debate in Parliament on the Lokpal bill.

Eyewitnesses informed BNewsworld that two blasts were heard at about 10:35pm.

Sources said that 10 to 15 terrorists are still in PNS Mehran where exchange of firing between terrorists and law enforcement agencies continue.

The list of nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards is released and as always, there has been quite a number of surprises this year too. With Tom Hooper’s “The King’s Speech” receiving 12 nominations, there is definitely a fair chance for the film to win the best picture award.

“The Social Network” is another film that has got 8 nominees and is hoping to win the 2011 awards. Andrew Garfield’s exclusion for the best supporting actor, has come as a shock to many but the actor reportedly lost the Oscar nomination because of splitting of votes among other strong supporting actors in the film including Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer. Another shocking exclusion was Christopher Nolan for the best director nomination for “Inception” which was one of the biggest blockbusters last year. This is not the first time that Nolan has been left out from the Oscar nominations, his highly successful “The Dark Knight” and “Memento” also some how didn’t impress the jury to award him as the best director. The American who shot dead two men on a Lahore street, triggering a diplomatic crisis between Pakistan and the United States, is a CIA agent who was on assignment at the time of the incident.

Raymond Davis has been the subject of widespread speculation since he opened fire with a semi-automatic Glock pistol on the two men who had pulled up alongside his car at a red light on 25 January.

Pakistani authorities charged him with murder, but the Obama administration has insisted he is an “administrative and technical official” attached to its Lahore consulate and is entitled to diplomatic immunity.

Based on interviews in the US and Pakistan, the Guardian can confirm that the 36-year-old former special forces soldier is employed by the CIA. “It’s beyond a shadow of a doubt,” said a senior Pakistani intelligence official.

The revelation may complicate American efforts to free Davis, who insists he was acting in self-defence against a pair of suspected robbers, both of whom were carrying guns.

But Pakistani prosecutors accuse the spy of using excessive force, saying he fired 10 shots and got out of his car to shoot one of the men twice in the back as he ran away. The man’s body was discovered 30 feet from his motorbike.

“It went way beyond what we define as self-defence. It was not commensurate with the threat,” a senior police official involved in the case told the Guardian.

The Pakistani government is aware of Davis’s CIA status yet has kept quiet in the face of immense American pressure to free him under the Vienna convention. Last week President Barack Obama described Davis as “our diplomat” and dispatched his chief diplomatic troubleshooter, Senator John Kerry, to Islamabad. Kerry returned home empty-handed.

Many Pakistanis are outraged at the idea of an armed American rampaging through their second largest city; some analysts have warned of Egyptian-style protests if Davis is released. The government, fearful of a furious public backlash, says it needs until 14 March to decide whether Davis enjoys immunity.

Outrage has been heightened by the death of a third man who was crushed by an American vehicle as it rushed to Davis’s aid. Pakistani officials believe the vehicle’s occupants were also CIA because they came from the same suburban house where Davis lived and were heavily armed.

The US refused Pakistani demands to interrogate the two men and on Sunday a senior Pakistani intelligence official said they had left the country. “They have flown the coop, they are already in America,” he said.

ABC News reported that the men had the same diplomatic visa as Davis. It is not unusual for US intelligence officers, like their counterparts round the world, to carry diplomatic passports.

The US has engaged in an edgy public relations offensive to free Davis, accusing Pakistan of illegally detaining him and riding roughshod over international treaties. Angry politicians have proposed slashing Islamabad’s $1.5bn (about £900m) annual aid; the state department repeatedly describes him as “a member of the administrative and technical staff of the US embassy in Islamabad”.

But Washington’s case is hobbled by its resounding silence on Davis’s background and role. Davis served in the US special forces for 10 years before leaving in 2003 to become a private security contractor. A senior Pakistani official said he believed Davis worked with Xe, the controversial firm formerly known as Blackwater, before joining the CIA.

Pakistani suspicions about Davis’s role were stoked by the equipment police confiscated from his car after the shooting: an unlicensed pistol, a long-range radio, a GPS device, an infrared torch and a camera with pictures of buildings around Lahore.

“This is not the work of a diplomat. He was doing espionage and surveillance activities,” said the Punjab law minister, Rana Sanaullah, adding that he had “confirmation” that Davis was a CIA employee.

A number of US media outlets later learned about Davis’s CIA role but have kept it under wraps at the request of the Obama administration, which fears that disclosure could inflame opinion in Pakistan and possibly put Davis at risk.

A Colorado television station, 9NEWS, initially made a connection after speaking to Davis’s wife, who lives outside Denver. She referred its inquiries to a number in Washington which turned out to be the CIA. The station subsequently removed the CIA reference from its website at the request of the US government. Nicole Vap, an executive producer, said: “Because of the safety concerns, we decided to amend the story. But it remains accurate.”

The episode has badly damaged relations between the CIA and the ISI, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency. Some reports, quoting Pakistani intelligence officials, have suggested that the men Davis killed, Faizan Haider, 21, and Muhammad Faheem, 19, were ISI agents with orders to shadow Davis because he crossed an unspecified “red line”.

A senior police official, however, confirmed American claims that the men were petty thieves – investigators found stolen mobile phones on their bodies, as well as small amounts of foreign currency and illegal weapons – but did not rule out an intelligence link.

A senior ISI official denied the dead men worked for the spy agency but admitted the CIA relationship had been badly damaged. “Their tactics of using good cop, bad cop do not work. We are a sovereign country and if they want to work with us, they need to develop a trusting relationship on the basis of equality. Being arrogant and demanding is not the way to do it,” he said.

Tensions between the spy agencies have grown in recent months. The CIA Islamabad station chief was forced to leave in December after being named in a civil lawsuit, and the ISI was angered when its chief, General Shuja Pasha, was named in a New York lawsuit related to the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Although the two spy services co-operate in the CIA’s drone campaign along the Afghan border, there has not been a drone strike since 23 January – the longest lull since June 2009. Experts are unsure whether both events are linked.

With the next hearing scheduled for 14 March, Davis awaits his fate in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

Pakistani officials say they have taken exceptional measures to ensure his safety, including ringing the prison with paramilitary Punjab Rangers. The law minister, Sanaullah, said Davis was being kept in a “high security zone” and was receiving food from visitors from the US consulate.

Sanaullah said another 140 foreigners were in the same facility, many on drug charges. Several press reports have speculated that the authorities worry the US could try to spring Davis in what one termed a “Hollywood-style sting”.

“All measures for his security have been taken,” said the ISI official. “He’s as safe as can be.”

Washington: Valentine’s Day is filled with cards, sweets, flowers and gifts, but its celebrations can create unintentional environmental side effects.

However, that doesn’t have to be the case this time, say experts.

Asif Zardari Tanveer Zamani Secret Wedding News :Govt Take Notice To Jang Group

News Source The News A spokesman for the Jang Group of newspapers on Friday expressed deep sorrow and regret over the release of a legal notice, said to have been issued by the authorities against the Group, a copy of which has not yet been officially delivered, but it has been made public on TV channels and media within the country and worldwide.

The spokesman said the notice appeared to be part of a trend to gain cheap, free publicity and claim innocence without pursuing the case in any court of law. Previously also the authorities had resorted to the same tactics by issuing notices against the Group when reports filed among others by Kamran Khan, a senior journalist of the Group, which were never followed up with action. The spokesman said it was interesting to note that the government had not reacted to hundreds of reports and stories about the corruption, loot and plunder of the rulers to prove its innocence but it had taken up a matter of huge public interest to target the Jang Group, as part of its continued policy to inflict financial losses to the Group. It would have been a matter of satisfaction if such prompt notice had been taken against reports of loot and plunder.

It was observed by the spokesman that the Jang Group has again been singled out while the same public interest story was already being widely circulated in the media worldwide, on websites and internet blogs and no one took any notice. It would be seen now whether only the Jang Group is targeted or others also are served with similar notices. What the Jang Group had done was to make an honest attempt to quash these widely circulating rumours and stories and had followed the strict principles of professional ethics by not only very prominently highlighting the denials issued by the spokesman of the President’s House and personal aide of the President Farahnaz Ispahani but had also approached the lady concerned, as it should be done in all such cases, by calling her and talking to her directly so that complete facts could come out once for all.

It should also be noted that the headlines of the Jang Group stories focused on proving that these rumours and web-stories were incorrect. Two particular headlines read as follows: “Presidency rejects Zardari’s marriage reports” (The News, Feb 4, 2011) and “Dr Zamani denies wedding Zardari”, Says she never met the president (The News, Feb 5, 2011). These reports did not reproduce any of the material which was circulating on dozens of web sites including many specific details. The numerous videos and speeches of Dr Zamani, available on the U-Tube and Internet containing many emotional references to President Zardari and “Son” Bilawal were also not used in any of the stories.

It is unfortunate that Dr Zamani, when contacted by Group Editor Mr Shaheen Sehbai, refused to deny or confirm the truth of the story. Her evasiveness gave rise to more questions as in such personal matters a simple no could have ended the matter there and then. That Dr Zamani was evasive even on the second day was confirmed when another senior journalist of the Jang Group, Mr Azim M Mian, who knows her personally, tried to contact her and get her viewpoint. She was again evasive and after a lot of persuasion, and later intervention by some Pakistani officials, she ultimately gave her version. It was also reproduced prominently in the Jang Group.

The Jang Group emphasises that in dealing with these stories, complete professionalism was used, all norms of ethics were observed, all versions were prominently printed and frivolous details which had been circulating for days and weeks were ignored. There was absolutely no malice and ill-intention but to bring out the truth about the whole issue which concerned a duly elected President of Pakistan. It may not be out of place to mention that public office holders, elected politicians and celebrities continue to remain a subject of great public interest round the world and there are numerous examples, from President Bill Clinton, to President Sarkozi to Lady Diana, to Prime Minister Berlusconi, and many such world figures, who have come under media scrutiny on matters of their personal life. Just two weeks ago Italy’s prime minister faced a prostitution investigation in Milan over a teenaged nightclub dancer who attended parties at his private residence. All these reports do not mean that the media is targeting any leader for personal malice or deliberately slandering him or her.

The Jang Group believes that the case is just the reverse when targeting the Group by the Presidency is concerned. There have been many attempts to stifle the voice of this Group by various government tactics and we had to seek the ultimate justice from the Supreme Court of Pakistan to get our rights in the World Cup rights case recently. It should be noticed that while several media outlets and newspapers have published the same stories with great details, notices have only been issued to the Jang Group. It is a clear case of using this subject to victimize the Group for reasons other than this particular issue, including the fact that the Group has relentlessly exposed corruption and bad governance of the present rulers.

The latest notice is also a part of that vicious campaign to try to inflict losses on the Group. While there is absolutely no reason to object to the stories published in the Group newspapers, as these were balanced, professionally handled, objective and true, the issuance of the notice asking for $100 million (Over Rs8 billion) is nothing but another show of contempt and hatred against the Group and its dedicated professionals who have done a remarkable job of exposing corruption at the highest level and have brought numerous cases to light, in many cases forcing the corrupt politicians and officials to pay back billions to the national exchequer.

People should remember that during the tenure of military dictator Pervez Musharraf the Jang Group and its professionals exposed his wrongdoings. In consequence the Jang Group was targeted by dictator Musharraf causing loss of billions of rupees to the Group. The Jang Group, however, refused to submit to the dictator’s pressure. As always, Jang Group is today committed to stand against the wrongdoing of anyone whatever high status he may enjoy. This has tremendously increased the respect and credibility of the Group among the people.

The Group is proud of its highly professional journalists who have shown remarkable courage and commitment despite the use of high-handedness and at times brute use of force to silence them. The Group spokesman said some people in the Presidency would gain no benefit by using those media elements who had remained their business partners and one of whom fled the country because he was wanted by NAB (National Accountability Bureau). Presidency rejects Zardari’s marriage reports

WASHINGTON: Dr Tanveer Zamani, a practicing surgeon and a PPP activist in the US, and Farahnaz Ispahani, PPP MNA and a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari, have commented differently on a flood of reports and blogs on the Internet which refer to the possibility that Mr Zardari may have secretly married again.

The Sindh Medical College graduate, in her late 40s, who did her PhD in political science from Ireland in 1996, before moving to US for practicing is of Mediterranean descent and reportedly lives in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, New York. Many websites claim that she owns estates in London, Dubai, Islamabad and Manhattan. She is also a known Democrat and supported Obama’s 2008 election campaign. She actively participated in Obama’s Healthcare reform bill to make it a law. Talking to me on Thursday morning when I called her on her toll free phone, she responded to my questions in a rather roundabout way. I confirmed twice that she was Dr Zamani. Her voice was the same as in many U-Tube videos. I introduced myself and asked her one simple question: “There is a lot of buzz on the Internet about a personal matter about you, would you like to confirm or deny it.” I did not mention the subject. Dr Zamani said she would not say anything but she had sought legal advice on the matter. I then asked directly that this was about her alleged link to Mr Zardari and a very personal matter, so what was illegal about it and why she had sought legal advice?

She said: “Personal matters are a very low priority. We have to handle the Egypt situation, the prices situation (in Pakistan), introduce Bilawal as the PPP leader, and many other issues. Personal issues come very low on my priority.” After this strange response, I asked her again: “Are you Mrs Zardari.” She said: “I would not comment on it.” I again said was it anything illegal that she had done. She said I have sought legal advice on how to handle the situation. “So you would not deny or confirm,” I asked. She said: No comment. I thanked her, wondering whether I had just completed the first interview of Pakistan’s prospective First Lady.

Reports circulating widely on the numerous blogs say recently she has been prohibited to attend public political meetings due to her security issues. In one such report it has been alleged that President Zardari in a meeting with Obama on 14/1/11 in DC, requested his help in acquiring security for Dr Zamani. No one would confirm this information. But on Thursday a categorical denial on this subject came from the Presidency and PPP MNA Farahnaz Ispahani, who also has been a spokesperson for the president and the PPP at same time.

Presidency spokesman Farhatulla Babar rejected the reports about president’s marriage. He said these speculative reports were the figment of a sick imagination, showing that the president’s opponent’s had chosen to target his personal life.

In a brief message posted on a blog Farahnaz posted from her email (fispahani@gmail.com) at 7:03 pm Pakistan time: “President Asif Ali Zardari is the widower of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. His marital status remains that of a widower”. “This is another nasty, pernicious rumour started by opponents to hurt the president, his family and the party. It is a baseless rumour”.

Dr Zamani denies wedding Zardari

Says she never met the president

NEW YORK: Dr Tanveer Zamani on Friday denied her wedding with President Zardari and also claimed that she has never met President Zardari either in US or elsewhere. “I have never met President Zardari and the only reason, I have refrained from commenting on an Internet hoax involving me is because I deemed it against my dignity to respond to such a hoax. Bloggers and journalists do not have the right to make up stories and disrupt the lives of people,” she said in an email message.

She explicitly and clearly denied being married or being subject to a proposal or notion of being married to the president, whom she holds in high esteem. Tanveer Zamani said in her email that this is her first ever denial on the matter while rumours and emails about her wedding have been in circulation for the last three weeks. Some Pakistanis in the community regarded the silence of Tanveer Zamani over her wedding rumours as “her own ploy to seek attention” of President Zardari. Why and how a dignified and educated Pakistani woman can ignore, keep silent over all such emails and rumours about her wedding with the president of Pakistan. She has been avoiding to make any categorical denial to journalists, when she was approached for her version or denial.

How this story of Pakistani community in US got to Islamabad and other capitals needs to be explained. Since her active participation in local PPP in USA, Dr Tanveer Zamani has been a highly vocal “jiyali” of President Zardari and PPP. She invited hostility from some of her PPP co-workers, who started a campaign of nasty emails against her. This email war has been on for the last five months. Some Internet surfers sent emails/comments about her passion for the personality of President Zardari.

During the last visit of President Zardari, her tireless efforts to meet the president failed. Factually, during her activism, she has never met Asif Zardari. Her meeting with Farhatullah Babar and few other PPP ministers can be seen on her Facebook page. She spent a lot of money on her websites, interviews and statements to publicise her pictures and speeches.

The story about the reported Zardari-Zamani wedding is not new to many New Yorkers and Internet surfers. It has been on Facebook and some other websites for the last three weeks. PAKISTANI President Asif Ali Zardari has been forced to deny rumours he has secretly married a US surgeon three years after the assassination of his wife, Benazir Bhutto.

Reports that appeared on the internet before being published in Pakistani and Indian newspapers at the weekend, suggested he married Tanveer Zamani, 47, last month.

The reports claimed that although no public ceremony had been held, the paperwork and prenuptials had been completed, and nine goats, six cows and a camel had been sacrificed. The couple were alleged to be keeping their marriage secret until Mr Zardari’s presidential term ends in 2013.

Dr Zamani would say only that she was “following the statement” issued by Mr Zardari’s office. This denied the reports, saying: “This is another nasty, pernicious rumour started by opponents to hurt the President, his family and the party.”

Mr Zardari is threatening to sue the Jang group, one of Pakistan’s largest newspaper organisations, for more than $US100 million ($99m) unless it retracts the report.

The film is based on a novel by Mary Downing Hahn and focuses on the ghost of a child that forms a close and dangerous friendship with another child.

Partial Curfew To be Imposed in Karachi After Massive Target Killings

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has announced that partial curfew will be imposed in some part of Karachi starting from today (Sunday).

Speaking to the media after a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Malik also said that pillion riding would be banned in those areas affected by the violence.

Malik did not explain what he meant by “semi-curfew”, but Sindh province home ministry spokesman Sharfuddin Memon told AFP “it is for the authorities to decide for how long they would like a troubled area to remain under curfew.”

“It is responsibility of the federal and provincial governments to protect the people,” Malik said, justifying the decision to impose the partial curfew, without disclosing which areas would be affected.

Malik also said, without elaborating, that there was “a third element trying to deteriorate the situation in Karachi.”

Karachi killings continue: Violence triggers political turmoil

The reverberations of the continuing violence in Karachi caused a stir across the national political stage on Saturday, with parties calling for a debate on the fresh flaring up of violence in the metropolis.

As the 48-hour death toll in Karachi hit 27, including the killing of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader, parties belonging to both the opposition and treasury benches submitted adjournment motions in the parliament to debate the violence.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik, the government’s specialist troubleshooter, also sprung into action and held a number of meetings with different stakeholders, including two with the MQM, after rushing to Karachi.

In the two meetings held at the Sindh Governor House between MQM leaders and Malik, the former complained about the targeting of its activists and leaders.

Disgruntled, the MQM delegation, which included Deputy Convener of the MQM’s central coordination committee Farooq Sattar, is reported to have stressed that promises made to the party by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani only a few days ago during his visit to their headquarters were not being fulfilled. Sources told The Express Tribune that the MQM wanted to meet Gilani once again to remind him of his ‘promises’.

Malik is also said to have called MQM chief Altaf Hussain to assure him that those involved in the killing of party activists would be arrested soon.

“On one hand our workers are being killed, on the other police and law enforcement agencies are arresting our activists,” said a source quoting the discussion that took place at Governor House.

The sources added that the MQM had handed over a list of suspects allegedly involved in the targeted killings as well as areas in which to launch an operation to stop the violence.

The federal interior minister is reported to have said: “We are going to establish permanent Rangers check posts in sensitive areas to deal with the target killing incidents”.

Since Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah was out of the city Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, represented the PPP and assured coalition partners that all issues would be resolved and that even the local bodies system would be restored after consultations with the MQM.

Another meeting is expected today in the Chief Minister House with Qaim’s return to the city.

Parties seek debate

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Saturday sought a debate in the National Assembly on the Karachi violence. Stressing that it was the need of the hour, he asked the government to convene a session and also called for action against those responsible for the killings.

Meanwhile, the Awami National Party, which is a coalition partner of the PPP, submitted an adjournment motion in the Senate to debate the Karachi killings. Party senators Azim Khan and Afrasiab Khattak filed the motion in the Senate secretariat, while Jamaat-e-Islami’s legislators in the upper house of parliament also filed separate adjournment motions to discuss the issue in the next session.

Similarly, Amir Muqam of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) filed an adjournment motion in the National Assembly secretariat to hold debate on the subject.

Former town naib-nazim killed

The killings continued in Karachi, with the latest victims including the former SITE Town naib-nazim Badshah Khan. He was gunned down while getting into his car outside his house in Orangi Town in the limits of the Mominabad police station. He was hit by four bullets and died on the spot. Fifty-year-old Khan had been affiliated with the MQM since 1993 and won the local bodies election in 2005. His funeral, held at the KMC ground in Baldia Town, was attended by a large number of MQM leaders and workers.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain has condemned the assassination and termed it as an attempt to stir more violence in the city. He said that all political parties in the city needed to exercise restraint and unite against elements conspiring against peace. He made a passionate appeal to the people of Karachi to see through the conspiracy.

Moreover, in a press conference at the Khurshid Begum Memorial Hall, the MQM coordination committee has asked president, prime minister, interior minister as well as the governor and chief minister of Sindh to ensure the arrest of the killers of innocent people, including Badshah Khan.

Member of the MQM Coordination Committee Gulfraz Khan Khattak said that concrete steps need to be taken for the protection of the life and property of the people.

Separately, Ziarat Khan, aged 35, was shot dead outside his home in Surjani police limits. Three people were hurt in firing in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and one in Baldia town.

Saeed, who was said to be a member of Sunni Tehreek, was killed and at least five people injured in a firing incident in Ranchore Lane late Saturday night. In the Mominabad police limits, two PPP activists, Zubair Kala and Tahir Baloch, were gunned down in firing near Urdu Chowk.

Police claims arrests

Capital City Police Officer Karachi Fayyaz Leghari while talking to The Express Tribune said that around 4,000 police personnel have been deployed across the city, adding that the situation on Saturday was much better due to the security measures.

He also claimed to have made major arrests in connection with the violence.

“We are conducting raids in parts of the city and the raids will continue where necessary,” the city police chief said. He further said that six arrested persons were involved in firing on a passenger bus, an attack on an ANP leader, the killing of a journalist and various other incidents of targeted killing.

ANP blames Malik, Mirza

Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh chapter chief Shahi Syed holds Interior Minister Rehman Malik, and Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza responsible for the targeted killings in the city.

Talking to The Express Tribune Syed said that, “governments are responsible for the targeted killings in the city; when there was target killing during Pervez Musharraf’s regime, we held him responsible and protested against him – and now the present government is responsible. Syed added that the intelligence agencies of the country are under Rehman Malik and the Sindh security is with Zulfiqar Mirza, so both are responsible for the situation.

Syed said that inquiries should be conducted into the killings of party workers – even if it means starting from the killing of MQM activists.

When asked about the main reason behind the target killings in the city, Syed answered, “Reconciliation is the main reason behind the target killings, which is another word for ‘begharti’ (unscrupulousness)”.

Meanwhile, the interior minister during a meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked him to play his role in stopping the violence in the metropolis.

The interior minister also discussed the prospects of JUI-F’s rejoining the government as a coalition partner. A JUI-F legislator said his party chief has declined to join the government, but expressed readiness to play a role in bringing peace in Karachi.

Breaking News A federal judge was killed and a congresswoman gravely wounded Saturday in a shooting outside of a Tucson, Arizona, grocery store, according to police and government officials.
In all, six people died and 12 were wounded in the shooting, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, according to Rick Kastigar, bureau chief for the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
President Barack Obama later said Chief Judge John Roll of the U.S. District Court for Arizona was among the dead.
A 9-year-old girl also died in the attack, according to authorities. The child, whose identity had not been released, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
An Arizona law enforcement source and a federal law enforcement source identified the suspect as Jared Lee Loughner. Other law enforcement sources put his age at 22. U.S. Capitol Police said the suspect was in custody.
Police recovered a 9mm Glock handgun, according to senior law enforcement sources.
Dr. Peter Rhee of University Medical Center in Tucson, said Giffords, 40, had undergone surgery for a single gunshot to the head that passed through her brain. Giffords was among five patients listed in critical condition, Rhee said.
At least two victims with gunshot wounds were transported to another hospital, Northwest Medical Center, according to spokesman Richard Parker.
Kastigar declined to comment on a possible motive for the attack. Police have set a news conference to discuss developments in the case for 6 p.m. (8 p.m. ET).
Tucson police Chief Roberto Villasenor said his department had secured the homes and offices of some unnamed federal officials as a "precautionary measure."
Although U.S. Capitol Police said there was no evidence of a broader threat involving federal officials, the agency said it had advised other members of Congress to take "reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal safety and security," the agency said in a statement.
Obama said he had directed FBI Director Robert Muller to travel to Arizona to support the investigation. An FBI spokesman said the agency was sending agents to the scene,

"An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve," he said. "Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society."

Earlier, PM Gilani was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival at the ‘Nine Zero’. Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malilk, CM Sindh Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Sindh Ishratul Abad accompanied the premier to the MQM headquarters.

The prime minister was welcomed by the MQM leaders Babar Khan Ghouri, Raza Haroon and other Rabita Committee members. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah and Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad accompanied the premier.

Earlier, the PM met twice with Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad within hours today and also had a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari. Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Sindh CM Qaim Ali shah associated the premier during meetings. The Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) estranged ally, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in a late night meeting decided to come back to the fold if the Prime Minister Gilani took concrete steps to remove its reservations. MQM in its Coordination Committee’s joint meeting discussed the strategy in view of the PM’s expected visit to Nine Zero Friday. It was decided to rejoin the coalition government and would not let the premier return empty handed.

It is worthy to note that the PPP-led coalition lost its parliamentary majority after the separation of the Muttahida and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) from it.

After announcing the withdrawal of the increase in the petroleum prices, the PPP government is hoping that the MQM will review its decision of sitting on the opposition benches. Gilani was expected to make some important announcements at the MQM headquarters, sources said.

The MQM has 25 seats in the National Assembly and six seats in the Senate. The PM will achieve an important milestone if he succeeds to win back the party’s support. Interior Minister Rehman Malik confirmed Taseer was gunned down by one of his own elite security force protectors after he reached Kohsar Market in Islamabad.

The suspected assailant, Mumtaz, was taken into custody, he said.

Mission of Soyuz TMA-20

The Soyuz TMA-20 (No. 230) was scheduled to fly to the International Space Station, ISS, at the end of 2010. In the ISS schedule, the mission was known as 25S. As of November 2001, the expedition was expected to last 152 days and return to Earth in May 2011.

According to early schedules, Soyuz TMA-20 would be launched on Nov. 30, 2010. By the time the spacecraft arrived to Baikonur launch site on Oct. 3 2010, its liftoff was scheduled for Dec. 13, 2010. However in the process of unloading, or a day later during the installation of the spacecraft into its test rig at Site 254, engineers discovered some damage to the railway car, which was used to transport the spacecraft from the assembly center in Korolev, near Moscow to Kazakhstan. In reports by semi-official Russian media, industry sources rushed to blame the train machinist, who allegedly violated safety rules while driving the train, which caused one of the attachments of the spacecraft inside the railway transporter to break and the spacecraft to "fall." However posters on the forum of the Novosti Kosmonavtiki magazine said that the spacecraft was not secured correctly in the car by the manufacturer.

Whatever the reason, during the final leg of the trip, (which could be the responsibility of the Kazakh railways, if the railroad would ultimately be blamed), the spacecraft was reportedly shifting around inside its transporter along with movements of the train. However, on Oct. 7, Kazakh railway company said that on Sept. 30, 2010, it transferred the train to Russian authorities at the entrance to Baikonur with no complains from the Russian side. A day later, Kazakh railways also said that speed data recorded during the movement of the train showed no violations of any rules, no emergency breaks had ever been engaged and the train was driven by a highly experienced crew. In the end, Russian officials had never filed any formal complains against Kazakh rail ways and RKK Energia officials later quoted the possibility of damaging the spacecraft during its unloading in Baikonur upon the arrival to the launch center.

Although initially officials told that the problem would not affect the launch schedule, by Oct. 5, Russian media reported that the damage to the spacecraft itself was significant enough to require a return of the spacecraft to Korolev for refurbishment. The bottom shield of the descent module, SA, reportedly shifted by 1.5 millimeters, possibly causing small cracks in the structure and damage the shield's attachment locks. In addition, a special covering on the propulsion section of the spacecraft was breached.

By October 8, after weighing an option of returning Soyuz TMA-20 to Korolev, Russian space officials made a decision to replace its descent module, SA, in Baikonur. The hardware prepared for Soyuz TMA-21 would be used. Despite an additional time needed for repairs, Russian officials said that the launch of Soyuz TMA-20 would still take place before the end of 2010, possibly with a delay of few days, comparing to the previous schedule. The launch date of Dec. 27 was initially quoted, but a delay from 10 days to two months was considered likely by European officials involved in the mission. By October 12, a new descent module has arrived to Baikonur onboard a transport plane. Along with it, a group of engineers flew to Baikonur to support three-shift work on the replacement of the descent module. According to Roskosmos, the replacement was completed by October 16, 2010. Four days later the spacecraft was ready for tests at the vacuum chamber. By Oct. 22, the launch date for the Soyuz TMA-20 had been set for December 15, 2010.

Tallest crew member

Another complication in the runup to the Soyuz TMA-20 flight was caused by the record height -- 188 centimeters -- of the European astronaut Paulo Nespoli. According to president of RKK Energia, Vitaly Lopota, a custom-built seat and related hardware had to be manufactured, after the company had first discovered how tall Nespoli was. Nespoli was believed to be the tallest crew member ever to fly onboard Soyuz.

Senior advocate Indira Jaisingh filed the petition under Article 226 on behalf of Sunjay Kapur. She argued before Justice Mudgal that the passport office had issued the document in Samaira’s name illegally. “My client and his wife continue to be married.

He is also the natural guardian of the child and has the right to decide when, how and for what purpose the child must travel abroad,” Jaisingh said.

She claimed her client was never informed about the passport, while the law clearly states that for a minor child both parents have to submit an affidavit.

According to her, Sunjay learnt about the passport last month. Since it had been issued by the RPO, Mumbai, Sunjay wrote to the authority protesting against issue of the passport.
